With the Veterans Affairs electronic health records modernization contract up for its first of four annual renegotiations, senators serving on the VA Committee sent a letter to Tanya Bradsher, VA deputy secretary, pointing out that more mistakes were made this year, and VA staff is “not getting the system they need.”

Responding to a February EHR software release of pharmacy-focused upgrades with code errors, the lawmakers asked the agency to add “additional accountability and oversight provisions.”
“The Department must take all steps possible to ensure VA is getting the services it purchased at a fair price and that Oracle Health is living up to its commitments,” Senators Jon Tester, D-Montana, Patty Murray, D-Washington, and Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, said in their May 6 letter.
In February, David Case, deputy inspector general at the VA’s Office of Inspector General, gave the House Veterans Committee’s subcommittee on technology modernization an overview of a software coding error that resulted in the widespread transmission of incorrect unique medication identifiers from new EHR sites to legacy EHR sites through the agency’s health data repository during a Feb. 15 hearing on the Oracle system’s safety and efficacy.

While the lawmakers acknowledged in their letter that there has been some improvement in performance over the last 12 months, they expressed concern that significant challenges impacting the care of veterans remain.
“These elements and the corresponding penalties resulted in Oracle Health crediting the government more money when it failed to perform over the last 12 months when compared to the previous contract,” the senators noted.
However, “Oracle Health’s delivery of the so-called ‘Block 10’ software release was incomplete.”
“We encourage you to use the opportunity the new contract structure provides to re-review terms and add additional accountability and oversight provisions to protect veterans and taxpayers,” they told Bradsher.

Many congressional lawmakers have questioned whether the VA’s Oracle Cerner system, a rollout currently halted, is fundamentally flawed, and some want to scrap it.
“VA is seeing incremental, but accelerating progress as it addresses the issues that clinicians and other end users are experiencing and as it optimizes the current state of the EHR system to ensure the enterprise-wide foundation is in place for success when deployments resume,” he said in a statement on the VA’s Budget Request for Fiscal Years 2025 and 2026.

Story Behind The World Travelling Stonemasons Of Samoëns. “Look, that one’s my father,” says 81-year-old Pierre Bianco, pointing to a grainy black-and-white photo in an album. It shows a man wearing a flat cap and waistcoat. Standing at the entrance to a quarry alongside a dozen or so fellow workers, all staring solemnly at the camera. One sits on horseback, a small wagon trailing behind. “This was taken in 1903,” he continues. “The horses would travel up to the quarry and take the stone back to town.”

The town is Samoëns, a small settlement in the Giffre Valley of Haute-Savoie, a region of the French Alps. Local lore says its name originally meant ‘seven mountains’. In a nod to the towering limestone peaks that stand guard all around. Pierre’s thick, calloused hands reveal a lifetime spent working with this limestone. The first to construct houses, later to create delicate, intricate and almost gravity-defying works of art. Among the array of hand-carved sculptures lining every surface of his living room are smooth. Marble-like spheres, slowly rotating on fragile glass stands.
He dives back into the album and picks out another photo, this time showing a group of sombre-looking boys and young men. They’re holding pickaxes and wooden bars, which, as Pierre explains, were once used for levering dynamite into rock crevices. These images are part of a larger collection of newspaper clippings, sketches and illustrations — records documenting a traditional skill and art form that’s in danger of disappearing. “Few young people want to work with stone these days,” says Pierre with a sigh, mimicking a console with his hands. “It’s sad, but it’s very difficult to make a living out of it.”

Pierre is one of Samoëns’ two remaining stonemasons — a profession that once passed down through generations and brought the valley fame and fortune. During the 17th century, Samoëns was revered for its stonecutters, known locally as frahans. Their reputation spread far and wide: they travelled throughout France, working on projects for the famed military engineer Vauban. And constructing the canals at Saint Quentin and on the Rhône-Rhine. The French philosopher, novelist and playwright Voltaire was so taken with their work that he hired them to build his château in Ferney-Voltaire.
“We know the furthest they travelled was Louisiana,” says Aurélie Veisy, a Savoie Mont Blanc heritage guide. As we sip coffee at local cafe À la Jaÿsinia later that afternoon. “We found the names of three masons in New Orleans archives.” Like many success stories, that of the frahans was a mixture of necessity, opportunity and good luck. Alpine farmers regularly sought alternative work during the winter months, when their fields were blanketed by thick layers of snow. In the Giffre, they turned to the mountains and discovered the local stone had a mineral hardness similar to marble, ideal for construction.
“At one point, there were around 40 quarries in the valley, and nine out of 10 men in Samoëns were stonemasons,” says Aurélie. “There were so many frahans and they were so successful that a brotherhood was formed.” La Société des Maçons aided the low-income, cared for the sick and trained young apprentices in the art of stonecutting. They also developed their own language, called Mourmé. “If they were working and didn’t like their boss, for example, they could talk about him secretly.”
The full story of this secret language has been lost over time. The only record is a Mourmé-French glossary from 1900. Created by a marble worker from Samoëns exiled to French-speaking Switzerland, with texts, anecdotes and even a prayer all written in the language. A copy sits locked away in the basement of the town hall, deep in the heart of Samoëns.

The next day I meet Nora Bériou by the Stonecutters Fountain next to Samoëns’ tourist office. Depicting a frahan at work, the large statue was created in 2000 by Guillaume Bozonnet. We walk along lanes lined with stone and timber buildings to the church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption. Every Wednesday, stalls spill into the surrounding streets and car park, but, today, we’re here to admire the roof, supported by limestone columns carved during the mid-19th century by local stonecutter François Mugnier.
Nearby stand the tall, wrought-iron gates guarding La Jaÿsinia, a botanic garden commissioned by local entrepreneur Marie-Louise Cognacq-Jaÿ in 1906. She picked an enormous limestone cliff as the location for the gardens, which had to be carved, moulded and shaped over three years by some 300 workers. We climb the steep stairs chiselled into the rock face, past plants and trees sourced from all over the world, including a Californian sequoia and a cedar of Lebanon, until we arrive at a petite chapel near the top.
Behind The Valley
It’s one of nine churches scattered about the valley, all built by local stonemasons. “Marie-Louise would bring her goats up to graze on these rocks while she looked out,” says Nora as we gaze over the valley, washed in late afternoon sunshine, as Marie-Louise would have done. “That’s why they built this chapel.”
That evening, I dine at La Fandioleuse, a tiny, packed restaurant that’s been serving an unfathomable variety of crepes for the last 45 years, all of them listed on the menu in Mourmé. I order Le Pèrlu, meaning ‘the cat’, a savoury pancake folded and stuffed with soft goat’s cheese, pine nuts and olive oil. Owner Marie Delesmillières says the names were a homage to her brother-in-law, who spent time researching the language. “There was obviously the family connection,” she says as she pours crepe mixture onto a sizzling galettière, “but I also did it to honour the stonemasons and the town’s history.”
Before leaving, I stop by Pierre’s to say goodbye. I find him standing outside his house by one of his most impressive sculptures. “This was by far my most challenging piece,” he says. “It took me years to create it.” He encourages me to gently push the 440lb Atlantean stone globe, which the breeze is slowly spinning on a thin film of water. As it starts turning in the opposite direction, I realise what a wonderful tribute it is. Despite changes — of direction, of generations — it remains set in stone, like the legacy of Pierre and so many frahans before him.

I’ve come to Lisbon exactly for neighborhoods like novas nações, a liberating space to escape the rising tide of racial and political stress I’ve been experiencing in the United States. I’m not alone.
On social media, countless Black travelers share tales of feeling marginalized and impotent in the face of systemic racism and police brutality, prompting a surge in overseas travel in search of historical significance, cultural diversity, and a relaxed atmosphere.
It’s not new, this practice of African Americans traveling to foreign lands for a respite. From the challenges and frustrations that come with being Black in America. In the 1920s and ’30s, the Soviet Union became an attractive place to visit and explore because it promised a raceless, classless society. In Lisbon and other cities such as Paris, Dubai, and Amsterdam. Travelers find memorials and tours that acknowledge the trauma of the slave trade and programs that explore cultural heritage.

I meet Madisyn Brown, a Black 22-year-old video essayist, on the flight from New York to Lisbon. She tells me that her great-great-grandmother was from Portugal. “But no one in my family has been to Portugal despite that connection,” she says.
On the final day of her trip, I reconnect with Brown for a drink on Avenida da Liberdade, a sun-drenched, tree-lined street with wide sidewalks featuring black, white, and sometimes gray limestones mosaics, called calçada Portuguesa. Avenida da Liberdade is Lisbon’s version of Paris’ Champs-Élysées, London’s Regent’s Street, and Beverly Hills’ Rodeo Drive.

Brown says her time in Lisbon has been magical. “I felt like a typical person walking through the world,” she says. “I never felt like I didn’t belong. I’m going to miss the positive energy here. America can be a really tough place to live.”
The irony isn’t lost on me—seeking solace in a city with ties to the very institution of slavery that shaped our history. We’ve learned to associate many European nations with colonialism, but Americans are not as familiar with Lusophone culture and history.
Many of us were unaware that Portugal was not just a participant in colonialism; it pioneered the trade in chattel slavery. In 1444, the small nation began transporting sub-Saharan Africans to Europe. In 1526, Portugal transported its first shipment of enslaved people to Brazil, effectively launching the transatlantic slave trade.

Yet, perhaps our modern “return” to Portugal signifies a crucial step in healing, a reclaiming of collective joy and freedom.
Toby Thompkins, a recent ex-pat from New York, sees Lisbon as a place of reconciliation. “I think that’s what a lot of Black Americans are tapping into,” he says, adding there’s an openness to dialogue and a sense of infinite possibilities. Reminiscent of America in the 1970s—a time of acknowledging and confronting racism.
How to experience Lisbon
To address its role in the slave trade, Lisbon’s government, in association with Batoto Yetu. Has erected more than 20 historical street markers to honor the contributions of Africans and their descendants in 2024.
Travelers can find the plaques near the riverside Terreiro do Paço. Where enslaved people disembarked from the ships that carried them there from Africa, or in places such as Rossio Square. The tribunal further said that because Grey had evaluated Vista Tower’s fire safety in accordance with the government’s own intricate guidelines, criticism of the delays brought about by his application for money from the Building Safety Fund was “misplaced.”
“The building’s internal repairs were finished in 2023, despite DLUHC’s claim. And the substantial restorative work on the external façade started early this year. The court acknowledged that we can expedite the process. And we are still confident that we will complete all work by our provisional completion date of autumn 2025.

“As was explained during the hearing, we have encountered multiple setbacks in our quest to get the clarification we require from DLUHC to move remediation along at a faster rate. When it has been feasible, we have communicated with the government extensively. “After the ruling, we hope to be able to go on and keep contributing to the solution of a problem that was not our fault and give leaseholders safer homes.”

Fight To Ban And Destroy PFAS. For over 40 years, Ted Van der Vlies and his wife Marga grew fruits and vegetables in their backyard on the outskirts of Dordrecht, the Netherlands. Onions, potatoes, lettuce, carrots, rhubarb, cherries, you name it.
Little did they know that their homegrown produce was likely poisoning them.
Just a kilometre away from their garden sits the tangled mesh of steel pipes, giant vats, and smokestacks of the Chemours chemical plant. A recent court case found that the American conglomerate knowingly dumped PFAS chemicals into the environment around Dordrecht for decades.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS for short, are a group of more than 10,000 man made chemicals famed for their water, heat, and oil resistant properties. They are found in thousands of products, from microchips and firefighting foam to food packaging and non-stick cookware.
Ban And Destroy PFAS years to break down in nature
While extremely useful, Ban And Destroy PFAS take thousands of years to break down in nature — lending them the name “forever chemicals.” Researchers have linked PFAS to decreased fertility, birth defects, and a multitude of cancers.
The levels of PFAS in Van der Vlies’ blood are dozens of times above the safety standard. Dutch documentary producer Zembla reports. He is seriously ill. He has both skin cancer and chronic leukaemia. Van der Vlies is adamant his condition was the result of drinking water and eating vegetables contaminated with the forever chemicals.
Public and regulatory pressure to phase out PFAS production is mounting.
Citizens are more aware of the issue than ever before. EU politicians from five member states have proposed a total ban on PFAS. Even major investors are urging chemical companies to clean up their act.
This has opened a new market for safer alternatives, as well as technologies to clean up the pollution already out there.
Yet, PFAS manufacturers and their industrial customers are pushing back. They argue that the chemicals are critical to the green transition and that a ban would reduce European competitiveness.
But do we really have to choose between fighting climate change or eliminating cancer-causing PFAS?
Destroying forever chemicals, forever
A recent cross-border investigation identified 17,000 sites across Europe polluted with PFAS. Of these, over 2,000 had levels of the chemicals that far exceeded the limit considered safe for humans.
There are a range of carbon and resin water filters that remove PFAS from water. Most water treatment facilities already use these filters in a process called reverse osmosis. But they’re far from 100% effective. Nor do they destroy the compounds.
Incineration was long considered the only way to break down PFAS permanently. However, it is energy intensive and studies have shown that it may just disperse the chemicals into the air instead.
“There are very few methods that we know of that permanently and safely destroy PFAS,” says Dr. Fajer Mushtaq, nanotechnology engineer and co-founder of Oxyle. “But it can be done.”
Oxyle is one of a small but rapidly growing cohort of companies working in PFAS remediation, a job that could cost $200 billion.
A reactor that mineralises PFAS
The Swiss company has developed a reactor that mineralises PFAS. Breaking apart their carbon-fluorine bonds — one of the strongest in organic chemistry. Oxyle’s system doesn’t rely on heat to destroy the chemicals. Which means its device uses far less energy than competitors’, says Mushtaq.
Key to the reaction is a so-called nanoporous catalyst. Mushtaq spent over 10 years developing this novel material during her time as a researcher at ETH Zurich.
The machine sucks up contaminated water into a chamber where it comes in contact with the catalyst. The reactor then vibrates, bubbles, and lights up the water. This motion activates the catalyst, which converts the energy into potent chemical “radicals.”
Ban And Destroy PFAS: These highly reactive
These highly reactive, electrically charged molecules oxidise anything in their path, including PFAS. Only minerals and water remain. This solution can be safely discharged back into the water supply.
Oxyle’s device uses machine learning algorithms to sieve through data from built-in sensors. This tells users what types of contaminants are in the water and whether they are above or below the mandated limits.
The startup recently completed a large-scale PFAS clean-up project for a chemical company in Switzerland. It pumped groundwater to the surface, treated it, and then put it back underground. Oxyle successfully eradicated 99% of PFAS from the site.
“We’re pretty much the only company in Europe doing this [PFAS destruction],” says Mushtaq. “But more and more are popping up, especially in the US. The potential for growth is huge.”
Ban And Destroy PFAS: another startup taking aim
Washington-based Aquagga is another startup taking aim at PFAS. It has developed what it calls a “pressure cooker on steroids.” The device subjects water to extremely high temperatures and pressure, in an alkaline environment. The process completely breaks down the PFAS molecules.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently passed the world’s strictest requirements for PFAS levels in water. The law is expected to open the market for companies like Oxyle and Aquagga.
Meanwhile, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden put forward a proposal last year for an EU-wide ban on all PFAS compounds. The European Chemicals Agency called it “one of the broadest restriction proposals in EU history.”
Pressure Mounts: Ban And Destroy PFAS
Incoming regulation isn’t just driving clean-up efforts, it’s targeting the problem at its source — PFAS production. And lawmakers aren’t the only ones calling on chemical companies to clean up their act.
In November, more than 50 investment firms representing $10 trillion in assets wrote to the world’s biggest producers of PFAS. They demanded that these companies phase out production, increase transparency, and invest in safer alternatives under the Investor Initiative on Hazardous Chemicals (IIHC).
“Chemical companies are used to dealing with complaints from NGOs and environmental groups, but when investors and politicians start applying pressure — that’s much more powerful,” says Jonatan Kleimark, senior chemicals and business advisor at ChemSec, a non-profit partly funded by the Swedish government. ChemSec advocates for stricter regulation of toxic chemicals.
Victims alleging harm from PFAS have lodged almost 10,000 lawsuits since 1999, according to a report. American chemical giant 3M, which invented the first PFAS almost a hundred years ago, recently agreed to settle one such claim for a whopping $10.5 billion.
“PFAS matters to investors because of the very direct impact on shareholder value from the increasing tide of litigation and regulation against chemical companies,” explains Eugenie Mathieu, earth lead at Aviva Investors.
3M shocked the world in 2022 when it committed to stop making PFAS by the end of 2025, citing pressure from regulators and investors.
But 3M is more the expectation than the rule — most big players are digging their heels in.
One of them is Chemours. The firm is one of the world’s largest PFAS producers, and the biggest supplier of fluoropolymers (a hard plastic type of PFAS) to the chip industry. Chemours is still investing heavily in PFAS production.
Critical to Decarbonisation
“In many critical applications there are no alternative materials that provide the unique and essential characteristics that fluoropolymers provide,” a Chemours spokesperson tells TNW. “The products we produce are critical to many advances in clean energy and decarbonisation.”
The company’s sentiment is echoed by many PFAS suppliers and their industrial customers, including the likes of TSMC and Intel — and it carries weight.
Aside from consumer products, PFAS are used in a number of technologies key to the green transition, from lithium-ion batteries to hydrogen fuel cells.
In chipmaking, PFAS products perform various key functions, for example, in the lithography manufacturing process. Nvidia — the chipmaker that’s ridden the AI hype wave to become one of the world’s most valuable companies — uses fluoropolymers in its semiconductors.
Makers and users of PFAS have formed a lobby group to fight against the EU ban. The companies are concerned that a broad restriction may lead to “disruptions of certain value chains” and “eventually eliminate some key applications,” a spokesperson for the group told Reuters.
Major PFAS manufacturers like Chemours and BASF also argue that a broad ban would not account for differences between the thousands of PFAS variants.
PFAS can be a solid, a liquid, or a gas. Some, like PFOA and PFOS, have been found to be especially dangerous.
“Lumping them all together doesn’t speak to the risks posed by a specific PFAS nor its uses and benefits,” says the Chemours spokesperson. “Essentially, it would be like regulating olive oil the same as motor oil because they are both hydrocarbons.”
The case for broad restriction
The EU has banned PFAS before. In 2020, the bloc prohibited the manufacture and sale of products containing PFOA — the chemical found in Van der Vlies’ blood.
Following the restriction, Chemours replaced the chemical, marketed as C8, with another PFAS it had developed years earlier: GenX. This new variant has since been linked to liver cancer.
“If you ban one they just create another,” says Dr Juliane Glüge, senior researcher in environmental chemistry at ETH Zurich.
All PFAS are persistent and accumulate in the environment and living things. Glüge and other scientists argue that this fact alone should be enough to justify a sweeping prohibition of all of the compounds.
Kleimark from Chemsec believes chemical companies are being “overly dramatic” in their claims that phasing out PFAS will stall the green transition.
“The vast majority of PFAS are not going toward critical applications,” he says. “And the proposed EU restriction makes concessions for specific use cases that don’t have viable alternatives, giving industry time to innovate new solutions.”
For instance, Swedish chemical company OrganoClick has invented an alternative to PTFE, a PFAS commonly used in water-repellant clothing. Dubbed OrganoTex, the biomaterial mimics the properties of lotus leaves, which naturally repel water.
In the Netherlands, Eindhoven University of Technology spinout Solarge has made a PFAS-free solar panel.
But it’s not just early-stage companies working on solutions.
Japanese ink producer DIC has developed new PFAS-free surfactants for semiconductors. Mitsubishi Corp. has invented a hard-to-burn plastic material that can replace fluoropolymers in smartphones and laptops.
For cases where alternatives simply aren’t available, “we need to rapidly scale up research and development,” says Kleimark. Chemsec works with PFAS manufacturers to explore ways to scale safer alternatives.
As regulation tightens, litigation piles up, and investors apply pressure, the writing on the wall is getting bolder for PFAS manufacturers: start finding alternatives now or risk getting left behind.
A long road ahead
The EU’s PFAS restriction proposal could come into effect as early as 2026. It would also restrict the import of products containing the chemicals into the bloc.
However, whether the EU’s PFAS restriction proposal will come into force is still uncertain.
The chemical industry has been shown to use several strategies in the past — similar to those deployed by tobacco, pharmaceutical, and other industries — to influence science and regulation.
EU states may also be unwilling to make any move that could harm their competitiveness. This is especially true as the bloc looks to cut its reliance on foreign imports of key technologies.
There’s a risk that the EU-wide ban will be watered down, says Kleimark.

In the meantime, PFAS production continues pretty much unabated. An issue that was largely avoidable has now become “the greatest chemical threat facing humankind in the 21st Century,” to quote Dr Patrick Byrne from Liverpool John Moores University.
What’s clear is that the green transition should not justify continued PFAS production. Nor does one negate the other. Safe alternatives are out there — we just need to scale them up.
If there’s one thing PFAS manufacturers can teach us is that where there’s a will there’s a way. Now we can only hope the chemical industry dedicates as much energy toward solving the PFAS problem as it did toward covering it up.
